[Newer build released] Liberty BASIC v5.0 alpha build 347

Okay, come and get it.  This is a rough first release on the new Smalltalk libraries, so unless you are a brave tester you should step back and wait for a few alpha test release cycles.

This is the first of the Liberty BASIC v5.0 alpha releases on updated

development libraries. This runs only on 32-bit versions of Windows 10,

Linux and the Raspberry Pi. Versions for the MacOS and 64-bit platforms

will be rolled out over the next few weeks.



For Windows use the lb5alpha.exe file.

For Linux 32-bit use the lin32-347 file: ./lin32-347 lb5alpha.im

For Raspberry Pi use the rpi-alpha file: ./rpi-alpha lb5alpha.im



This alpha release is admittedly a pretty rough cut but please realize this

is an alpha release, not a beta.



-Most of the editor options aren't implemented yet.

-Printing doesn't work.

-The debugger is not finished.

-The syntax coloring is glitchy.

-Graphics drawing has a few issues to resolve.

-No support for API calls yet.

-The popup presentation of errors is rough.

-No support for application deployment yet.

-Etc.



Some exciting new features are evident including:



-Database support. SQLite in this release. ODBC coming very soon. See the

callerlog.bas example program.



-New syntax for drawing graphics and controlling GUI widgets. The old syntax

is still supported. Look at the examples. More documentation will come.



-A grid widget. See test_grid.bas



-The ability to pass handles into subroutines and functions. See the

testGraphicsCommands.bas file for an example.



Take a look at the included *.bas files. Most are testxxxx.bas files that

test various things. There some sprite and graphics examples. There is a

mostly working version of FreeForm that is based on FreeForm for Just BASIC

because FreeForm needs to be cross platform so "no API calls" because then it

would be locked in to Windows or the Mac, etc.

Alright, time for fun.


EDIT: Startup and some quick tests are all running well on all platforms.

Got access to my PC, my Linux server(s), and a few Pis, so I should be able to get a decent spread.

I gave the Windows version a quick spin under Wine, but couldn't get the native Linux to run at first.
Did sudo ./lin32-347 lb5alpha.im from the downloaded directory. Failed. Then realised you have to first mark the files as executable.. runs OK now.
Now for some fun-- well done Carl to get this far.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I cannot run LB5 on a Win7 32-bit PC. Is there something I can do?

What happens when you try?

Does it give you an error message?  Did you check the error.log file?

I tried it on Windows 7 64-bit without issue.  I will try it on a 32-bit Windows machine later when I have the chance.

I definitely do want to support Windows 7 especially for the next year or so, but Windows XP and Vista are not really worth the effort at this point.

It appears to be with the version of VCRUNTIME140 unable to be used with my version of Win7.

Are you sure that is it?  How did you figure that?

The error message of Windows says that. I cannot post it since I'm using Win7 in Italian.

The thing is that some Windows installations will already have a copy of vcruntime140.dll depending on what software is already installed.  The correct way to do this is that Liberty BASIC should have a proper installer and that installer will check for the library and if needed download from Microsoft an installer for the correct version of the DLL and run that installer inside of its own.

It's a hassle, and Microsoft should simply include all the runtime libraries in their Windows updates.  They used to do this with their service packs, and I don't understand why it isn't still done.

If you do a web search for this you will see many people complaining about this issue.

Here's what I would suggest.

-Delete the vcruntime140.dll from the lb5-347 folder
-Download from Microsoft's own web site the correct one for your language and install it.

Let me know if that doesn't solve the problem.

I just tried this Alpha release on my MINI Toshiba laptop with Windows 10 Pro 32-bit and get error message: Title = "lb5alpha.exe - Bad Image", message = "C:\--my folder--\lb5-347\lb5-347\VCRUNTIME140.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0x000035a." I had opened the Zip using 7-Zip, but went back and used WinZip instead, and got same message. Everything worked well on my desktop PC running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. I am no expert, by any means, but if you need a 32-bit tester, then I will try to help.

I just renamed the "vcruntime140.dll" to "vcruntime140.dllz", as suggested and Alpha does now run on my 32-bit laptop!

Thanks for the feedback.  I will put the vcruntime140.dll in a subfolder for the next alpha release and we will see how many people need it.  I wish Microsoft would do something smarter about this issue.
