can't print to text editor box

I'm trying to print something to a text editor box. Not a text box, but the full text editor. I have a button that when clicked should do this:

print main.textedit1, "testing"

This has no effect. What am I doing wrong?

The program sees main.textedit1 as a variable, not a handle.  Put a # in front of it.

  print #main.textedit1, "testing"
