Calculating total of a field$ within data

Hello again, within the code below i can save a name etc. This code is another slight mod from a code posted in another thread. Within the GUI there is a calculate button with a textfield, i am trying to get the result of totaling all of the digits saved across multiple entries from the number$ string. For example if name 1 has 30 and name 2 has 20 in their number textbox when saved, how would i find the total of them? Resulting in 50. My calculation shows 0. 

As in the gui:

Name: Contact 1    
Number: 30              < numeric field

Name:Contact 2
Number: 20              <numeric field

Calculate: 50      < Giving me the total of all numeric fields in the saved data file

Did you actually calculated it?
In your code label [calculate] just reads first record from contact4.dat
and thinks someone put that total to number$ field

So how would i read and calculate it from the data? Because that only adds the total of contacts not the numbers only within those contacts. This code only counts contacts.

I'll take a stab at it. First in your field statement I would make number$ just number, not a string. I understand that you are getting that from a text box but you can convert it to a number by number=Val(number$) Or you can convert it to a number when you retrieve the data the same way.

And if I understand correctly you want the total of those numbers so all you need is total=total+number.

You have the ability to store a running total(variable), and you have the ability to perform addition(+), and you have the ability to convert a string representation of a number to a numeric variable(var() function).

Read each record in the file, and add the "number" of each record to the running total.

As an example with a more basic file, if you had this in a file:

It isn't a huge step to cycle through all of the records and sum val(number$) to a new variable and then print that to your textbox.

I am absolutely sure you know how to cycle through your records since you have posted code to do that many times. If it is the tot=tot+val(number$) part that has you stumped then I chuckle.

Here's the set of steps you need to take.

1. Get the total number of contacts(which you're doing)
2. Loop through each contact(which you WERE doing, but no longer are)
3. For each loop iteration:
--- Get the contact information from the file(gettrim #contacts, index or something similar)
--- Add the value of number$ to the running total. ( total = total + val(number$) )
4. After the loops are complete, output the total running count.

You were close, you were just doing some weird transformation on the number field instead of just converting it to a numeric variable.
