I like the idea of a global variable, but am used to living with this 'problem' as I use mainly Linux but also Windows machines.
I always have a shortcut to a hex editor on my desktops for cases where I need to confirm file structures.
Plus, for many years I used manual typewriters where muscles did the CRLF- and on the Acorn/BBC/RiscPC line which used LFCR!

Having a system variable that sets the default line end is good. Consistent. You either write and read files with CRLF or just LF. But, and it is a big but, or it might not be. Reading a foreign file, how to know what delimiter has been used? I think that automatic delimiter detection is a separable issue from the default delimiter and setting the delimiter.

Yes, it is whether file handling is auto detect / conversion or whether we have to read and understand every file before handling.
