I an using BASIC v4.5.1 and noticed on my WIN10 the first line I Input (a string) from a file, three characters that are not part of the file. They are:
To solve this, I have to add a throw-away line for the first input. This only happens with strings. Numbers input normally. Is there a fix?

Where this file came from? If you print from BASIC thern read back, do you have extra characters?
My guess that it could be some UNICODE marker telling file is indeed in UNICODE which is written by some editor.

I agree. I just checked a few files. IF the file was created with Liberty BASIC the anomaly DOES NOT appear. IF the file was made by DocPad, it appears. IF the file was made by Notepad, it DOES NOT appear.
Thank you for that insight.

Discovered the editor DocPad was set to UTC-8 instead of ASCII. HOW it got changed, I don't know. (One of the problems of having so many options I suppose.)
This is good. DocPad has been my Editor of choice for awhile. It has a lot of odd options that I find useful (Alphabetize, Discard duplicate paragraphs, Trim trailing spaces, Jump to line and even Convert Case (Upper and Lower).
