Are there other formats that are not flat text files for saving?

If you know something about SQL then yes it can be used. If you know nothing of SQL why burden yourself with that extra learning. What is the real question? Why the concern about "flat" files? Do you have a relational data model set up and running? If so its already in tables and the file wont be flat.
I think you should describe your data a little more, how many records etc and what access you will want. Single user? multi user?
I already suspect that the answer to your question is a RAF. Easy data storage, easy access and its only a little bit flat! But a little more info will get you a better answer.
