Carl, What made you use Smalltalk? There's got to be a good startup story there.

Carl, What made you use Smalltalk? There's got to be a good startup story there. I used to program in C before. I almost left the software engineering field at that time to become a wedding photographer. Then I found Smalltalk and it rekindled my love of programming. That's why. Smalltalk is awesome, and I don't use that word to describe very many things. Smalltalk has dominated my software projects since 1988. Smalltalk and BASIC.

Let me just add that C is a fine tool for certain things such as operating systems and device drivers, but not for general programming, not unless of course you are a certain kind of nerd.

I totally agree. You can thread a needle with a backhoe (Mythbusters), but why?
I used to get the weirdest looks from programmers or engineers when I'd break out Liberty BASIC to sort through long lists of data or consolidate data files into one. They'd ask, "Why don't you just have the Perl group do that for you?" Or "The VB guys could write you up a script in Word to do that." And my answer was always, "'Cuz I'm already done."
:@)

Heh, that brings me back to the first time I was in the computer programming class offered by my high school. They were using VB as part of the curriculum then, and I found amusement in slipping LB onto the school computers so I could use it to auto-generate the general template VB code I needed for the stuff I was doing. That certainly made things a lot faster.

That certainly made things a lot faster. Love it. When I was working on a government contract years ago I wrote a utility for staging the demo files in Liberty BASIC. Each time we ran the demo the LB program would be run to reset the files to the beginning.

Cool film. I have programmed in pure machine code, C, Forth, Fortran, Javascript, Vbscript, dhtml/CSS, and the coolest of them all, BASIC! ;-) Best of them is C, and Basic.

Very cool backstory on the use of SmallTalk to write Liberty Basic, Carl! Any particular version of SmallTalk? I know there are many variants. I'm thinking of looking into Pharo myself.
