Today I am ready to throw Windows out the Window! I no longer own my computer but 150 background processes tie up 100% Disk for many many minutes.
@carl Gundel are you working on or thinking about Linux version?

You know, Linux also used to be smaller and faster. All these things get bloated over time. Do you have a small and fast Linux distro that you like to use?

You may have more Wine/Parallels users than you think. I also use Liberty on my iMac M1 via Parallels

No but I have an old computer made useless by Windows bloat. Every day like today, I threaten to convert to Linux but there are so many and... well I imagine big learning curve. Then I read something on Virtual Machines that sounded interesting, different OS coexisting on same computer, hmm something to think about while the Windows blue circle twirls

I do 99% of my LB stuff on Linux Mint, on machines 6 or more years old. Snappy, always up-to-date. And free.
I occasionally use my wife's W10 machine- too old to upgrade to W11. It had become incredibly slow. Then I realised 99% of the time it was spinning a process called something like EoA ( as in Ease of Access) I do all the usual MS checks/updates/etc regularly, That MS can allow Windows to run such process killers without telling me is the kind of thing that put me off MS years ago.
I've played with Virtual Machines, hosted on both Linux and MS, but I prefer to select separate installations at boot on different disks or partitions.

Yesterday I had to frow old antivirus out of a window for exactly same reason - it eat up all processor time Installed new one, so far so good I did the same... The checker I had seemed to go on for ages checking all disks. Killed the processor's speed while doing it. I set it to stop checking some of the disks and actioned options to reduce priority but it just became too much. Replaced it with a new checker and it seems to be more efficient.

Today someone told about rebuilding the Search Index. Takes quite awhile, a couple of hours but you can do other things while it's going, it's simple and so far so good. Here are instructions if someone has problem of Disk at 100% in Task Manager Window st if you even try to move the mouse the Windows wait circle flips on! www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-rebuild-search-index-in-windows-10

Microsoft needs to come up with some sort of intelligent scheduling system, and it needs to detect when someone is trying to use the computer and to put those 'background' process into some sort of idle or very low CPU consumption mode in order to provide the user with a good experience. But, they don't seem to care.

My experience was that Windows accumulated "services" over time. So all these services for programs that had long fallen into disuse, or had been used once, clogged up startup and slowed processing. On top of that every time I started the machine one of my two cores was immediately monopolised by Windows for update and maintenance. In the end it was taking Windows over two minutes to warm start.
I tried a new instal, but while startup was far faster I still found Windows "owning" one of my two cores. So I bought more cores on a new PC. Now I have instant starts and while Windows does immediately start maintenance it matters less because it is only one of several cores.
I am more cautious about installing software "just to try". Now there has to be a good reason and some positive internet feedback before it gets installed. I have never used any other Virus checker other than Windows Defender, completely unobtrusive and completely safe. Costs zero.
I also have an iMac but that's another story.

Only Windows 10 for now. My primary computer is too old for Windows 11, and some of the hardware in it is starting to fail. Not looking forward to replacing it, with the current electronics market...
I think my laptop can support Windows 11, but hasn't been offered the upgrade yet, as far as I can tell.

Got tired of Windows a long time ago. My goto for liberty basic is an old (now off line) XP. Waiting for a usable version for UBUNTU. Wine works, but is flakey. Charley
