Hi, is a new article series for the API'S to help us to understand programing into Liberty.
Which DLL does it belong to? How is it used? In what ways? How is it composed? What parameters does it take? What stylebits accompany it
"SendMessageA"
Thanks
Gaslouk

The API is HUGE. We are not going to learn much looking at fragments. If you have a real interest in getting into the API then you need Alyce Watsons' book. Walt has posted some nice code and there is a whole series of API tutorials on the LBPE. Bear in mind that LB5 will use less API and react less to API tweeks. But LB4.5.1 will be on your PC forever and understanding a little bit about the API will help you know limitations, stonewalls and bypasses. www.lulu.com/shop/alyce-watson/apis-for-liberty-basic/ebook/product-18586977.html?page=1&pageSize=4

I bought Alice's book. It is PDF and my English is not so good. If I had it in text I could translate it in google translate. It is difficult because it is in PDF format.
thanks. Gaslouk.

I haven't seen Alyce book in PDF but usually (not always though) you can copy parts of the PDF as a text and feed it to Google translate. Just my 0.02 $
Also Abc of Api is a web page so it could easily be translated.

Win32 API Function SendMessage() is in the User32.DLL. It performs the task its name implies. It has four parameters, hWnd, message, additional information(wParam), more information(lParam).
Depending on the message sent it may or may not return a value. It is commonly used to get information from a form or control or set various parameters of a form or control in your application or a second party dll that is attached to your application.
It is extensively used with list boxes, combo boxes, edit controls, list view controls. Less commonly to programmatically set or get the state of various buttons and to retrieve the text length and text or set the text of form and controls.
An example to set the caption of a form:
WndHndl = HWND(#FORM) Caption$ = "APPLICATION [C:\MY APPS\SOMEAPP.BAS]"
CALLDLL #user32, "SendMessageA", WndHndl AS ULONG, WM_SETTEXT AS ULONG, 0 AS LONG, Caption$ AS PTR, Retval AS VOID
WM_SETTEXT is the message 0 is the wParam Caption$ is the lParam RetVal is the return value, in this case none.
In order to use it you have to know the message to send and what wParam and lParam values are associated with the message.

Gaslook- if you have a pdf document it is easy to screengrab it a page at a time and do OCR (optical character recognition) to get the text- then use Google translate. I did that recently on a Kindle novel I'd bought is Spanish and wanted to use in class with a Google English version. It also pointed out a whole lot of 'Mexicanismos'- words common in Mexico but not in Europe. But it took me a while to do about 90 pages!!I am NOT encouraging anyone to distribute such copies to othe people...

In google translate you can put a pdf document for translation. the problem is that the code is also translated. Then the code is unreadable.

Yeah. But my method you can easily select bits you want translating and bits you do not. But I was surprised at how many changes I had to make by hand when I recently scanned some old programs from the seventies- the old dot-matrix characters proved hard to decipher and often needed me to correct by hand.
