Hi again,
We use a Microsoft SQL database for all our operational data, and I need to pull data out, and to put it back after processing. It would be exceptionally good if this could be done from a remote device (tablet), but my application can be run on a PC on our in-house network.
It has been suggested that this may be possible?
Anyone experienced doing this?
Kind regards, David

You have an IT person. Why does s/he not write you a dll to handle SQL?
After all, what are you paying the IT person for?

I would probably do the SQL stuff on your network if I were doing it. I have no idea how complex your tasks are, but getting database operations correct and able to handle possible errors is going to likely take a bit of time and quite a bit of effort. Keeping everything maintainable should be a key concern.

Is the database actually available online currently? I would be surprised, usually they are locked away. If so it will be quite a hurdle to get the data served online never mind access it. I read it can be done but we have zero code examples of how to do this. You should browse the Run BASIC forum to see if there are examples there but you would need to reengineer your entire application to run in a browser.
An alternative is to export a flat file for each job. You can pick up that flat file remotely and work on it on the tablet. Then the amended flat file is submitted and after some vetting could be imported to your sql dataset.
You need your IT man on board no matter what.

Hi, Let's answer Walt first. Our It man (my son-in-law) is a network engineer, who designed and created data centres when he had a proper job (before joining the family buiness) Brandon, Most of it goes over my head, but the basic nuts of it is that it would be really useful if the data my application collects can go directly into our SQL database. That would cut out a huge amount of manual inputting. We would like it to be two way, so that as soon as an appointment is booked, it appears immediately in the relevant tablet, and as soon as the job is signed off, the data comes straight in. Rod, Son-in-law (IT man) has explained to me that our database is very secure behing our firewall, and we have a sort of mini-database outside the firewall that is used to communicate with the engineers and clients. This all goes way over my head, so I may have misunderstood a few bits. He assures me security is paramount and is as watertight as it can be? Son-in-law is well on board, but is not a software writer? It does appear, as Walt suggests, that we will need to hire someone who can make this work? My understanding is that it would be ideal if we had the data on the tablet in a database that was linked to our system? Looking on the bright side, there is now a lot of help with SQLite on the forum by different people, and as I'm getting close to completion of my data collection and validation, I might just try a bit of reading to see if I can understand it? For anyone who's interested, www.libertybasicuniversity.com/lbnews/nl106/SQLite.htmKind regards, and thanks for now, David

David,
I should point out that the code in lbnews/nl106/SQLite.htm no longer works. SQLite changed the API about 48 hours after the article was published. Such is life.

There has been quite a bit of SQLite traffic on the forum lately. A quick search should turn it up.
